Your massage session will always start with the therapist asking you questions about your general health; any pain you may be experiencing; your activities; and your stress level, to determine the goals of the massage, whether they be pain relief, treatment of an injury or muscular condition, or just pure relaxation!
The massage therapist will leave the room so that you may undress to your comfort level. Most massage is done while you are unclothed, but can also be done fully clothed, if that is preferred. You will be asked to lie on the massage table, underneath a drape (usually a sheet & blanket, sometimes a large towel, depending on the treatment.) As the therapist works, only the area being worked on will be undraped. (Most people don’t know that proper draping / coverage is New York State law!)
It is very important to feed back to your therapist during your session about your comfort level. No massage, even medical or deep tissue should ever be severely painful!!
You may chat or be quiet during your session – whichever helps you to relax. Quiet is usually more relaxing for most people.
At the end of the session, the therapist will let you know that your massage is over, and that they’re leaving the room so that you can get dressed. You will be in a deeply relaxed state, so you should be careful when you get off the table. It may take a short while to be fully alert.
